BIOGRAPHY

On 7th September 1938 a prince was born into the Ilajo Royal Dynasty in Kabba-Bunu town (former Kabba province) in Kogi State to the family of Pa George Aiyewumi.

He was named Steven Adewumi Aiyewumi.

After completing his early education, he began his journey with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on the 1st March 1956. Following which he attended the Institute of Administration Zaria from 1956 to 1957. Subsequently, he attended training at the Police College Kaduna and was posted to the Admin Department at the Kaduna Police Headquarters.

His remarkable dedication led him to pursue numerous courses, both in Nigeria and abroad.

Some of the notable courses attended includes:

. Inspectorate Course Kaduna Nigeria -1961

. Junior Officers’ Course Tulliallan, Scotland -1970

. Senior Command Course Bramshill, England- 1974

. B Course Staff College Jos, Nigeria -1974

Renowned for his diligence and humility, Aiyewumi affectionately known as “SA” by one of his closest friend’s epitomized integrity. He was an incorruptible police officer who would always strive for excellence in all his endeavours. He was one of the most hardworking dedicated and intelligent police officers of  his generation.

As a fervent patriot he had a great love for his country – Nigeria. He displayed unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s peace, stability and law enforcement even in the face of adversity during events such as the Tiv riots of 1964, “Operation Wetie” in 1965, and the Maitatsine riots of 1980, Mr. Aiyewumi always showed courage and distinguished himself amongst his peers. God protected him through all the storms and dangers he faced practically daily.

His extensive service spanned various roles and commands across the nations such as:

. Staff Officer to late IGP Alhaji Kam Salem (rtd) Police Force HQ Lagos

. Commissioner of Police (Admin) Police Force HQ Lagos

. Commissioner of Police (Personnel) Police Force HQ Lagos

Commissioner of Police Rivers State Police Command

Commissioner of Police Imo State Police Command

In 1991, Elder Steven Aiyewumi retire as an Assistant Inspector General of Police Zone 7 Abuja, culminating 35 years of meritorious and dedicated service of his nation.

A devout Christian and a lover of God he served as an Elder at Winners Chapel (Living Faith Church) Goshen Abuja. He was also field representative of Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International. He served God with all his strength and might.

His commitment to service extended to other endeavours as he was Board of Trustee member of the Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria (COSROPIN)

Even post-retirement Aiyewumi remained indomitably committed to his law enforcement roots. In fact one of his popular quotes was “I am retired but I am not tired” it came as no Suprise when he became one of the founding members and pioneer executive of the Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria (ARPON) he served in the executive council of ARPON as the national treasurer for many years. His enduring enthusiasm and positive spirit propelled his efforts to enhance the welfare of both active and retired police officers.’

In 2022 he was elected the President of the Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria (ARPON), a position he held until he passed away and went to be with the Lord on 12th July 2023.

Baba who had never despised opportunity of seeing the safety of lives and protection of properties served as an Adviser of the Heroes and Heroines of Peace and Unity Initiative [HEPUI] NGO between 2018 to 2021 before he emerge the pioneer Grand Patron of the HEPUI NGO in 2022 until his demise, however his contribution is a living memory in the NGO’s Home Security Laboratory (HSL) Program.  

Elder Steven Adewumi Aiyewumi NPM, PSC, AIG (rtd) lived a fulfilled life and leaves behind a cherished legacy. He is survived by his beloved wife, elder Mrs. Mabel Olufunke Aiyewumi, children and grandchildren.
